Crochet 101: The Chain

Making a chain is the first thing you should learn when you start to crochet. It starts the foundation for many projects, and it can be used as a stitch (the chain stitch) when doing various details on your projects. Although it can be frustrating when first learning how to control how tight the stitches are (tension), it will get better and will become quite easy.

MINI TUTORIAL VIDEO:

To make a chain, start by making a slipknot in your yarn and leaving a tail roughly 6" long. Your hook will slip into that knot and you will tighten slightly if needed (not so tight that you can't move the yarn easily back and forth).

Your feed yarn (the yarn coming from the skein/hank/ball) should have lots of slack so it's easy to pull.

To work the chain, yarn over (yo) and pull the feed yarn through the loop using the hook. Gently tighten the loop that is now on your hook, if needed, and repeat. Each loop counts as one chain (ch).

If you find that your tension is too tight and your yarn is not sliding easily along your hook, relax! Try not to pull the chain too tight when you're working more stitches.

HAND POSITION:

Hand positions can vary!! Here are TWO examples; the pencil grip, and the knife grip
